School projects and other interesting info

Friday 10/6
Today we spent some time in Glasgow, specifically at my sister’s.  A couple of months ago, I had had an email correspondence with her class of 9 year-olds, who were learning how to email, and who were doing a research project on Glasgow now and then.  Today I visited her class to have them “present” their leaflets, designed for the foreign visitor to Scotland.  From them I learned all about St. Mungo,  the patron saint of Glasgow , and the meaning of the name Glasgow - “dear green place”.  They were cute as they described to places to visit, many of which were very familiar from my own childhood. Their enthusiasm for our common native city was refreshing, and the school building itself, while not the primary (elementary) school I attend, was so very reminiscent of the school I did attend, architecturally and in so many other ways. They told me about the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, recently refurbished, and now very “hands-on” especially for children.  45+ years ago, it was not so hand-on but it was the place we visited on many a wet Sunday afternoon, since in lay at the far side of our neighborhood park. They suggested I visit Glasgow University, which made me smile, since I visited it daily for six years during term time in the 1970s. A trip to the Hunterian Museum, part of Glasgow University, was highlighted as must-see, and again I smiled – how were they to know that my dad had cataloged artifacts there many years before I was born!

It’s good to reflect on where you’ve been.  It helps to understand where you’ve subsequently gone, and who you have become.  Today was a day to be thankful for an excellent education, and all the doors that such an education has opened for me since those days long ago.
To be a life-long learner, you’ve got to start early in life!   And you’ve got to keep going!!
